Scimago Ranking System: A New, Comprehensive Tool for Evaluating Academic Research and Publications
The Scimago ranking system was discussed as a new and comprehensive tool for assessing the scientific research output of universities and publications during a recent university journal ranking meeting.
According to Dr. Mahmoud Bahramizadeh, Editor-in-Chief of the Iranian Journal of Rehabilitation (IRJ), the Scimago ranking system was developed by a research group at the University of Granada, Spain. It is recognized as one of the most recent and thorough methodologies for ranking universities and research institutions worldwide.
Dr. Bahramizadeh, a faculty member at the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences, explained that Scimago gathers its data daily from the Scopus database and provides this information free of charge to the public.
The system's data covers scientific articles published from 1996 onward. Using these data, Scimago classifies countries and scientific journals into quartiles Q1 through Q4 based on various indicators.
The database includes metrics such as SJR (Scimago Journal Rank), H-Index, total publications per year, Citable Docs, and more, each reflecting specific aspects of a journal's performance.
In this system, articles are assigned weights, and journals' impact and quality are displayed through citation counts, publication volume over specific periods, as well as visual reports and charts.
Dr. Bahramizadeh emphasized that editors and managers of journals indexed in Scopus can access the platform to review detailed information about their articles' quality and impact, enabling them to develop targeted strategies for improving performance.
